چکیده

[1] Despite considerable research, large uncertainties exist in the various area-scales budgets of CH4 flux between soils and the atmosphere. We postulated that small wetlands greatly contribute to the CH4 budget in semiarid regions, where wetland contributions are often assumed to be insignificant. To test this hypothesis, small riparian mires of the Xilin River basin in Inner Mongolia were selected as a case study for weekly measurements of in situ CH4 flux. Average CH4 fluxes were 234.3 and 1.9 mg CH4 m 2 d 1 for the riparian mires and the upland grassland, respectively, during July–October 2003. Although the riparian mires cover only 0.4% of the Xilin River basin, their total CH4 emission was about half of the amount of CH4 consumed by the upland grassland with 89.7% land cover ratio. Our results indicate that estimated CH4 budgets for semiarid regions should include an assessment of small wetlands.

Use of a process-based model for assessing the methane budgets of global terrestrial ecosystems and evaluation of uncertainty

We assessed the global terrestrial budget of methane (CH4) by using a process-based biogeochemical model (VISIT) and inventory data for components of the budget that were not included in the model. Emissions from wetlands, paddy fields, biomass burning, and plants, as well as oxidative consumption by upland soils, were simulated by the model. Emissions from ruminant livestock and termites were ...

Modeling Methane Emission from Wetlands in North-Eastern New South Wales, Australia Using Landsat ETM+

Natural wetlands constitute a major source of methane emission to the atmosphere, accounting for approximately 32 ± 9.4% of the total methane emission. Estimation of methane emission from wetlands at both local and national scale using process-based models would improve our understanding of their contribution to global methane emission. The aim of the study is to estimate the amount of methane ...

Influence of Different Plant Species on Methane Emissions from Soil in a Restored Swiss Wetland

Plants are a major factor influencing methane emissions from wetlands, along with environmental parameters such as water table, temperature, pH, nutrients and soil carbon substrate. We conducted a field experiment to study how different plant species influence methane emissions from a wetland in Switzerland. The top 0.5 m of soil at this site had been removed five years earlier, leaving a subst...

A Case Study for the Okavango Delta Wetland: Using Modis Time Series Observations to Ascertain Flooding Regime Dynamics for Improved Methane Emission Modeling Inputs

Remote sensing plays a significant role in the estimation of methane and monitoring wetlands flooding duration and extent [1]. Methane is the second largest contributor to the present day greenhouse gas effect [3]. However there are considerable uncertainties in the magnitude of this biogenic emission [2]. For instance, the amount of methane emissions from the Okavango Delta is not known, which...

A Semi Automated Empirical Model for Estimation of Ch4 Emission Using Coarse Resolution Thermal Data

Concentration of atmospheric methane is considered to have a significant effect on climate because of its GWP (Global Warming Potential), which is 21 times of CO2. Methane is generated by the process of methanogenesis under wet anaerobic conditions, oxidation by methanotrophic bacteria and transportation to the atmosphere. Wetlands are the major source of methane emission, because of the presen...
